Implants and Implant Prostheses

Implants and Implant Prostheses

What conveniences do implants provide to patients in the treatment of tooth loss today?

“The biggest advantage of implant treatment is the removal of edentulousness without any intervention to the existing teeth. Alternative treatment for single tooth deficiencies was a bridge. Again, in individuals with more missing teeth, implant treatments are advantageous as an alternative to removable prosthesis in free-ending teeth. Even in edentulous cases with no teeth, patients do not have to use the full palate thanks to the implant.”

ADVANTAGES OF IMPLANTS

– How do patients who are satisfied with the implantation instead of using removable prostheses express this?

“The biggest problem of the patient using the movable prosthesis was the crowd in his mouth. But our first goal with implant treatment is to make fixed prostheses. If there are cases where the bone is not sufficient, a fixed prosthesis is made by creating bone again with advanced techniques. In adverse cases, screwed fixed prostheses are made on the implant by further reducing the number of implants. In cases where it is very desperate, a removable prosthesis is made on the implant. But since they are supported by the implant, they are prostheses with high patient comfort. The patient fully performs the chewing function. Aesthetically, she will eventually have a beautiful smile.”

HOW LONG IS THE WAITING TIME?

What is the waiting period of the patient according to the number of missing teeth and the condition of the jawbone? “The implant is a two-stage treatment. It takes about 4 months for the implant to be placed into the bone surgically. If the bone process is involved, the superstructure phase starts after waiting for 6 months. If the patient’s bone is suitable, measurements are taken immediately after the implant is placed, and the teeth are completed and fixed in the mouth within that week, and the patient is sent off. Now, after the implant is placed in the bone with digital methods, the measurement is taken with a digital scanner and the production is done on the same day. If everything is as desired, the patient comes and gets the implant and the tooth is cemented and sent.”

MATERIALS USED IN PROSTHESES

– What are the properties of the materials used in implant-supported prostheses?

“Materials that can be used on implants in fixed prostheses are metal-supported porcelain systems. Zirconium, which is a different version of this, is also porcelain coated systems. Full ceramics that do not contain any zirconium or metal were not preferred in the past, but now they can be used on implants with the advancement of technology. If removable dentures are made, classical acrylics are used. With these, porcelain illusions can be made on their anterior teeth. With All On Four techniques, fixed prostheses in acrylic system or porcelain style can be offered.”

“MAINTENANCE DETERMINES THE LIFE OF THE IMPLANT AND THE PROSTHESIS”

– Which of the materials used last longer?

“Care determines both the life of the implant and the life of the prosthesis. After getting an implant, patients should pay attention to oral hygiene, healthy eating and proper chewing. In fact, there is nothing that affects this life extension materially. What is important for us in material selection is more aesthetic expectation. Currently, the ones that provide the most aesthetic appearance are full ceramics and they can also be applied on the implant. Next comes the zirconium, but metal-supported teeth at the bottom.” Can a person decide on the color of the tooth to be made with this digital tooth design? “Patients’ opinion is taken at all stages, not just in digital. Because in the end, what is aesthetic for me may not be for the patient. Therefore, what the patient wants and expects is very important. That’s why the choice of tooth color is definitely done together with the patient.” . Do poorly made dentures adversely affect the oral health of people? “Bad dentures are also intertwined with tooth soft tissue. Therefore, the edge compatibility of the prosthesis should be good and the materials used should be tissue-friendly. Since the structure of the tissues in the mouth changes after a while in old prostheses, the old prostheses lose their harmony and this has damaging effects. Because the mouth is constantly exposed to mini traumas.”

CARE OF IMPLANTS

– Do implant teeth need to be brushed as well? What maintenance is recommended?

“Patients with implants should brush their teeth efficiently twice a day. Every tooth, every surface needs to be cleaned properly. Plus, dental floss, under-bridge threads, and interface brushes should also be activated according to the advice of the physician.”

– Why the implant is recommended; What benefits does it bring?

“Implant is an investment for the future. At the moment, I recommend the implant to an area that has a chance of a bridge. Because being able to place that implant there when the bone is good eliminates the risk of not being able to find that bone when needed in the future. Bone resorption occurs in the dysfunctional region. A good bone is also needed for the implant. Therefore, the implant placed at the right time
